Job description

Join us as a Working Student in Web & Technical Operations Engineering and help strengthen the technical backbone of our website and internal workflows.

At OpenProject, we believe that great project management software should be open, transparent, and accessible to everyone. As the leading open source project management platform, we empower teams worldwide - from NGOs and public institutions to innovative tech companies - to collaborate more efficiently and manage projects with full control and digital sovereignty. We are now looking for a motivated working student who enjoys technical problem-solving, building integrations, and improving how data flows through systems. This role is an excellent opportunity to gain real-world engineering experience in a modern, fully remote environment.

Your Mission

As a Working Student in Web & Technical Operations Engineering, you’ll support our team with hands-on technical work across our website, internal systems, and automation workflows.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Support website development & maintenance: work on our static website (Middleman, GitHub, Visual Studio Code, code-driven setup), contribute updates, and support improvements to structure, content, and functionality. Create or refine components using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, supporting both usability and user-facing content.

  • Implement integrations across systems: connect website forms with CRM and automation tools, build and refine data flows, and help ensure information moves smoothly and reliably across platforms.

  • Automate internal workflows: develop or assist with scripts, micro-integrations, and automation logic that streamline internal operations and reduce manual work.

  • Troubleshoot and monitor data flows: help identify and resolve issues related to website behavior, integrations, and data processing, ensuring reliability and accuracy.

  • Support cross-functional teams: collaborate with engineering, marketing, operations, and other teams to handle technical requests and enable efficient processes.

  • Document processes and improvements: maintain and update documentation for integrations, workflows, and technical processes to support transparency and knowledge sharing.

You're a great fit for this role if…

  • You are currently enrolled in a university program - ideally in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Web Development, or a related technical field.

  • You have foundational knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/Typescript, and are comfortable working with GitHub and Git-based workflows.

  • You enjoy diving into systems, figuring out how things work, and solving technical challenges.

  • You are eager to learn about tools, APIs, and workflows - even if they’re new to you.

  • You are reliable, organized, and enjoy working with a high degree of autonomy in a remote-first environment.

  • You have a keen eye for accuracy when working with data flows, integrations, and documentation.

  • You are passionate about open source software and want to contribute to a mission-driven company built on transparency and collaboration.

Bonus points if you…

  • Have experience with static site generators and web frameworks, we use Middleman and Bootstrap.

  • Understand REST APIs, webhooks, or automation/integration tools.

  • Are familiar with NodeJS and/or Ruby

  • Have experience working with automation scripts or small integration projects.

  • Are interested in open-source development and collaborative workflows.

What’s in it for you?

  • A purpose-driven role where you can significantly improve internal workflows and user-facing website experiences.

  • The chance to gain hands-on engineering experience across web development, automation, and system integrations.

  • A growing, international team that values collaboration, openness, and continuous learning.

  • A remote-first setup with the flexibility to work where it suits you best.

  • Opportunities to meaningfully impact how processes and systems operate across the company.

  • Regular code reviews (via pull requests on GitHub) ensure constructive feedback and continuous learning.
